About the Client & Brief

Cottonwood Bakery is an independent bakery specialising in bespoke cakes for weddings and events. I was approached by the client to create a new brand identity and website for the formerly named ‘Sweet Slice Bakery’. The main objective was to create an identity that would encompass the clients values and approach to work. Helen focuses on creating unique and creative cakes of the highest standards which have been inspired by the baked goods Helen has tasted in New York City, costal California and everywhere else in between.

The requirements for the logo and branding were to have a high end contemporary feel and to have a clean, outdoor feel with a slight american touch. I worked closely with Helen, creating various mood boards and collecting a varied range of inspiration.

Solution and Outcome

For the logo I explored various typographic styles and graphic symbols that were quite common amongst competitors. In order to differentiate we decided not to use any visual cliche baking graphics such as cupcakes, rolling pins, whisks etc or to use any handwritten or script style fonts. Instead we opted for a clean and contemporary sans serif font and based the logo symbol around the shape of a cottonwood tree leaf. This gave the brand identity a more personal and unique image which is representative of Helens work and her approach. The cottonwood leaves also turn a vibrant yellow in autumn, the yellow colour pallet also helped to add a vibrant, friendly and colourful feel to the identity.

The website elegantly showcases the services Cottonwood offers along with a mouthwatering menu of flavours and pictures of Helens work. I also put a strong focus on the written content whilst letting the images speak for themselves. The site has been carefully tested and optimised for mobile and tablet viewing as well featuring clear call to actions making it practical and easy for users to find what they are looking for.
